Antique Russian icon Menology of October XVIII century.
Until the IX century, the fixed ecclesiastic calendar was universally accepted. It listed regular commemorations for Saints, contributing to the spreading of their iconography. It became usual to see menology icons representing the lives of the saints day by day. When the whole year was depicted, the succession of the moths followed the orthodox calendar, starting with September and ending with August. This kind of icons was usually placed in churches where people could see them, to provide a visual representation of the works of the saints and invite to prayer.
